First of all, I love Dragon Ball Z, it's my favorite anime...and it's the first anime I ever saw, and there's nothing wrong with the Dragon Ball Z series...But I think some of the Movies are worth ranting on.
In the series and Movies...the plot is usually the same:
- Stop villain from destroying Earth or the heros.
And if you think about it, Vegeta, Freeza, Cell, and Majin Buu all at one point try to destroy earth, or the heros, and Majin Buu actually does destroy Earth, so he gets a trophy...
Now alot of the villains try to beat the main hero Goku, and sometimes they have other kinds of plans like using the Dragon Balls to wish for immortality, and that's plausable and very smart way to keep the show interesting...Vegeta and Freeza both try to do this, while Cell and Majin Buu...meh...they don't care since they think they're already immortal. But thinking about that, there are 13 movies of Dragon Ball Z...well actually 14...It's a lost movie, but it don't count. In all 13 movies there's a villain...and to me most of them are the exact same one dimensional villain...they were just drawn differently, but some actually are good. I may not rant on all the movies, but let's take a look at each of them in order:
1. Dead Zone
This movie was cool when Ocean Group did the voices...But now it seems a bit...meh...I will praise the plot as it is the first to actually have a good plot. Garlic Junior and his men kiddnap Gohan and collect the Dragon Balls so Garlic can wish for Immortality...sound familar? Well for the first time ever...The bad guy gets his wish, yep Garlic becomes immortal and it becomes harder for Goku to stop him. The movie is pretty decent, but the end is a bit lame, and it's not like you see it coming...I mean Garlic Junior's immortal, what are they going to do? Well Garlic can't beat Goku and Piccolo because they're stronger than him, so he pulls the Dead Zone out of his pocket, which is a big black hole and tries to suck everyone in...But then Gohan arrives and knocks Garlic Junior in....
..............wow........Well at least they didn't kill him, that way he can appear later on in the series for the same exact thing to happen all over again.
2. The Worlds Strongest
This one...its not that great to me, but it maybe worth seeing once. Dr. Whello is a brain...and he wants to switch brains with the worlds strongest fighter...And at first he thinks it's Master Roshi...although he's been stuck under Ice for 50 years...So then Goku goes to rescue Master Roshi and Goku defeats Whello, not much else I can tell you really. Although it is interesting that he beats a brain in a metal suit instead of some guy his own size, that's pretty cool. But the lowest point has to be the end where Whello realizes he can't win...So what does he decide to do? That's right...Blow up the earth.
3. Tree of Might
This one was my favorite...But it's not anymore...I mean back in the day there were only 3 movies, now that theres 13 I picked another one.
Some guy that looks exactly like Goku plants a huge tree that sucks up all the life on earth so it can produce fruit for him to eat so he can be stronger...you get that? This movie is pretty bad, for one thing...They don't explain why this dude looks like Goku, and I don't mean he KINDA looks like him, I mean he's an exact duplicate from hair to eyes to nose to everything...but they are not related...So what the crap? another thing is this "destroy the earth" thing is gettin old, but he doesn't really do it to destroy earth, he wants the fruit to make him stronger...yeah...every villain wants power, immortality, pretty much god hood...but they never really succeed. So how does Goku beat him? He uses the fruit from the tree to get his energy back.....boom! There goes Terlus and the Tree.
4. Lord Slug
This one is just stupid...Lord Slug arrives on earth and what does he do? He uses a smoke machine to freeze earth...yes he tries to destroy earth too, but he collects the Dragon Balls and wishes for Eternal Youth......? Whoa what? He wishes to be young again? Pffff...What a moron, he could have wished to never die and he wouldn't have been killed by Goku at the end of the movie. There's other stuff that happens thats stupid too, like Piccolo rips his ears off and tells Gohan to whistle, and Lord Slug is a Namek with...apparently...super hearing, so it hurts his ears which gives Piccolo enough time to give his energy to Goku................Why couldn't Piccolo just SHOOT HIS EYES OUT?! What sense does this make? Also Goku reaches a False Super Sayain mode and is able to hurt Slug...But he doesn't kill him that way, he uses his weaker Kao Ken attack to smack a huge hole in him, then uses a Spirit Bomb to hit Slug and his Smoker...and all's well......does this seem a bit repetitive?
5. Cooler's Revenge

Cooler starts off with him saying how foolish it is that his brother Freeza let Goku get away when he was still a Baby.....and guess what happens? Yes Goku kills Cooler and Cooler realizes he could have killed Goku when he was still a baby...but he was lazy.
Cooler's Revenge is probably better than alot of the movies combined, however there are a few things I will complain about, Goku fights off 3 of Cooler's men at the begining and he doesn't really beat any of them, Cooler wounds Goku and the rest of the movie is about trying to heal Goku...lame...My gripe is that Goku could have killed all 3 of them in one hit, but he doesn't...why? Instead Piccolo has to show up near the end of the movie and kill them all for Goku...I will praise the fight between Goku and Cooler at the end, and he beats Cooler by blasting him to the Sun...that's cool. Oh yeah something else that makes no sense is that Goku doesn't fight Cooler as a Super Saiyan first...he toys with him, Cooler transforms then Goku can't possibly beat him, until Cooler starts to crumble the planet...then Goku gets up and sees a bird die beside him................Goku gets up and holds the bird and brings it back to life with his Super Duper power.......and he can now beat Cooler...all because the death of a bird made him mad.......Look I know the show was made in Bird Studios...But...I'm not sure I could describe how ridiculous that is. They show a bird when Gohan transforms to Super Sayain 2 as well...Gloat some more Bird Studios!
6. Return of Cooler
Planet Namek is under attack and the heros go to the planet to save it.
This is one of the worst movies, and for all the wrong reasons. For one thing...what happened in the last movie? Cooler DIED....so how is it that he's back and in a robot meta body? Well they explain it later in the movie so I won't ruin the total awesomeness(lameness) for you. The only thing cool in this movie is the fighting, Goku and Cooler going at it at the start is just awesome...But most the lines, the plot, the story...burn in a furnace. This is the first movie that Vegeta shows up, but he doesn't really save the day like Mighty Mouse would, Cooler beats him up so badly he makes Oolong look stronger, at the end Cooler explains how he's still alive........ok you ready? here it goes: A computer chip out in space starts to gather mass and energy of broken space ship parts around itself, and collects a piece of Cooler himself, so Cooler is a now a big spaceship that can make meta bodies of himself................How totally stupid is that? Why couldn't his mom just wish him back to life with the Dragon Balls if they wanted him back for the 6th movie?! Seriously, DBZ has a problem with killing off people, Freeza's a good example, he is left on the first Planet Namek and the planet EXPLODES......But he lives......and they make him replacement parts for his body, not 2 episodes later he's killed by being cut in half with a sword......So the guy can survive a planet exploding....But can't make it through a sword cut? What sense does that make? The creators brought him back just for him to get killed again? Something's wrong with you guys. Anyways back to Cooler, this movie has probably one of the most anti-climatic battles in Dragon Ball Z history, Goku prepares to throw a ball at Cooler, Cooler ties Goku up, Vegeta cuts the ropes, Goku gets free and hits Cooler with the ball, and Cooler blows up..............that's it...........after a crazy battle with one of his meta bodies outside......Goku beats the real one in one hit....Oh and if that wasn't enough, through this entire space ship exploding into pieces...Vegeta finds the computer chip and destroys it.......He finds the chip that is as big as a Choclate bar....a ship....as big as the moon...explodes....and out of the thousands of pieces of burning parts and ruble...he finds the chip........
.............................WHAT THE ****
7. Android 13
This one is not ok with me either, most this movie consists of Goku getting his butt served to him on a silver platter by Android 14 and 15...And the strangest part of the movie is that Goku and Trunks don't go Super Saiyan until the last TEN minutes of the movie...Geeze...Goku has some kind of stupid patience to wait so long...I guess that's why Vegeta shows up so late because there's no way he'd wait so long to actually decide maybe he wants to win now. So it goes like you'd think, Vegeta knocks 15's head off, Trunks cuts 14's waist in half...But then 13 absorbs 14 and 15's power generators, and chips, and transforms into this big ugly blue dude with orange hair....So Goku uses the spirit bomb, absorbs it, and punches a hole in 13....the end.
8. Broly
Broly is probably one of the best movies, if not the best movie for Dragon Ball Z, Broly is an evil Super Sayian and he hates Goku for making him cry when he was 1 day old........................
............................................
Ok nevermind, there's a problem with that, and yes they were both one day old because in the Bardock Movie Goku was born the day after the movie started, it could have been one or two days, but Goku and Broly are pretty much the same age...But I am seriously not kidding, Broly hates Goku...Because Goku when he was one day old would shout his little lungs out, and Broly being right next to Goku...made Broly cry because...I guess he was afraid at the time.
Look I understand why Dr. Gero wanted revenge for Goku for destroying his Red Ribbion army, I understand why Freeza wanted revenge for humiliating him...and even why Cooler wanted revenge for Freeza dying.......But THIS?! This is ridiculous.
Ok so the revenge thing is beyond realitly, but the movie's not so bad, it's one of the few movies that doesn't take the majority of it's time on Earth. Paragus arrives on earth and tells Vegeta they've found the legendary Super Sayain, although they don't know it's Broly yet, but eventually...yeah they find out. There's a few other things that don't make much sense, for example Piccolo shows up later in the movie after bringing his own spaceship.......so exactly how did he know where they were? The planet coordinates and everything? Also Paragus explains how he and Broly survived Planet Vegeta exploding, apparently Broly who is a day old baby at the time, uses his powers....to...get them....out...........Ok I don't care what you say, a day old baby doing that, even if he has a power level of 10,000.......no....he can't. Paragus was very annoying, I mean really annoying, I wanted him to die the first 5 minutes, because he would talk all big and high and mighty and he wasn't worth nothing at all. Broly ends up killing Paragus in the end ( I think...who knows Paragus may show up again in some unplausable way.) But the worst has to be when Goku and Broly have the last battle, through the last half of the movie the group can't lay a finger on Broly...he's a tank, he doesn't get a single cut or scratch or anything....at all....he's a monster. So how does Goku beat him? Well Gohan and Trunks and Piccolo give Goku their power....then Vegeta decides to...and all the sudden WHAM! Goku's now stronger than Broly and kills him in one punch.......what the crap? Are you kidding me? Goku could have collected energy from every character in the Dragon Ball Z universe and still not scratch Broly. It would have made more sense if Goku just said "Ok forget it let's go." Grab everybody and just leave Broly to die by the approaching comet.
9. Bojack
ugghh...I don't like this one that much, I mean it starts out great with a nice tournament and it's cool to watch the heros fight each other...But when Bojack and his men show up it goes down hill...Bojack and his men were trapped inside King Kai's planet, and after it was destroyed by Cell...here comes Bojack and once again for like the 7th time...they can't beat him. Until Gohan gets some encouragment from Goku, Gohan rips his henchmen to shreds, and kills Bojack in one hit...another anti-climatic ending. But what's really sad is the edited version cuts out alot of the decapitation of the two guys that Gohan kills and of Bojack....you got the edited version? You got ripped off bad...I mean seeing the guys fly in half is like the best part isn't it? But what's the worst is they cut out everything of Bojack dying, you don't even see Gohan punch him it's like the screen flashes and whoop he's dead.
10. Broly Returns
Well looks like Broly pulled a Cooler, he didn't die from a planet exploding and a comet the size of the sun hitting him....And in my honest opinon.....this has to be the stupidest and the worst movie of them all....I mean Broly DIED...leave him alone...but no they had to bring him back so he could get killed in an even more unplausable way. The movie starts out having nothing to do with Broly until he wakes up from hearing Goten screaming, then Videl trys to fight him...and she can't beat him because she's not very strong at all. Goten and Trunks then fight him...well more like survive him until an adult Gohan shows up, well despite being at Super Sayain 2...which is suppose to be stronger than the Ultimate Super Sayain level...Gohan can't beat Broly...which...doesn't make sense....I mean Super Sayain 2 beat Cell...And Trunks got to Ultimate Sayain level, he couldn't be Cell, so how can Gohan not beat Broly? So Gohan comes up with this master plan to lure Broly into lava.....and it works...........But then Broly comes back and Gohan and Goten combine their powers to kill Broly once and for all...hooray...Broly should have died on the comet.
11. Bio-Broly

WHAT THE MESS!?
Broly is back...AGAIN?! Come on!! Give us someone new. Well it's not exactly Broly...this time it's a clone of Broly...oh somebody shoot me.
Goten and Trunks are on their own this time, that's right, Goku's dead, Gohan's at school, and the others aren't going to be much help anyways so...Goten...Trunks...good luck...As if killing Broly with a comet wasn't enough, then him coming back and being killed by a Kamehameha wave wasn't enough, the boys kill Broly by whacking him in some weird purple liquid that eats everything...I mean there is no real plot here, they end up at a labrotory, Broly breaks loose and they got to kill him and save everyone on the island. It's one of the rare times that Goten and Trunks accomplish anything by themselves, but they beat Bio-Broly and all is saved.....OR IS IT?
12. Fusion Reborn

This one is actually good, some guy in the afterlife is messing up things and dead villains escape to earth, Goku who is already dead, teams up with Pikkon and they try to defeat Janemba, the villain for this movie is really well done, I guess for one thing he doesn't talk, or laugh, or make cocky statements. He just beats up Goku and Vegeta and Pikkon. The whole fusion thing is kinda weird but Goku and Vegeta combine to make Gogeta...and they defeat Janemba with a rainbow ball attack...And you know there's not much to rant on really...it's a good movie...it's worth watching. Alot of the old villains return like Freeza, and some other people like Hitler show up...which is weird.
13. HireDragon
When I first saw this movie a long time ago I decided it was the best movie...until a while later I realized....no....it's definetly not. This one has the exact same feel as the first few movies, the only thing that might make you think it's good is because it has all the characters in the movie...except for Yamcha and Tien and Chazou...but hey, they weren't important. The movie at the very end where Goku has defeated the Dragon and the sunlight comes out of the clouds...it made me feel like I've seen that somewhere before...for some reason after every bad guy is defeated in one of these movies.....well we kinda knew that would happen wouldn't we? Every movie except for Dead Zone feels like that. It takes the whole entire movie to explain the plot (which there isn't really) Then the group fights the bad guy at the end...they can't win...they find a way to win...and they're all happy until the next bad guy shows up.
Some of these movies feel like the same thing, only changed around a bit, but still the same thing over and over and over again...And some of you maybe saying "Hey, it's Dragon Ball Z, you can't complain." Well no, I like Dragon Ball Z and it's characters...but most of the movies I don't. |
